AI for Parents

Artificial Intelligence takes many forms, and it changes quickly. Kids and teens are exposed to it through social media and advertising. While not all uses of AI are bad, it’s worth talking to your kids about how they are using it and ways to stay safe.

According to surveys from PEW and Common Sense Media, kids report using AI for basic internet searches, help with homework, writing and creating images, and as companions or emotional support. The BBC found some common themes in a review of these surveys: Because teens are generally more comfortable with the tech, they’re using AI in ways parents don’t expect. Even though kids are keeping up with the changing landscape of AI, parents should help their kids navigate what’s safe.

The library has curated a list of resources to help parents learn about AI. However, AI is evolving quickly, so these resources can also give you topics to check through a search of your own, such as the impact of AI on children’s health, AI companions, or how to use AI ethically for school.
