Looking for ways to help kids take a break from screens? You’re not alone! As families become more aware of the impact of screen time, many are searching for engaging alternatives to social media, gaming, and constant digital activity. The Library is here to help with fun, hands-on programs and resources that spark creativity, build real-life connections, and give kids exciting reasons to look up and explore.
For Littles
Play Space!
If you haven’t checked out the brand-new play space yet, then come by and let your imagination soar! Every three months it has a new theme for the activities.
Kids Game Shelf
For our littles that need a sensory break from our wonderful new Play Space, there are games and puzzles that can be used in the Library. They are located on the shelves built into the Youth Desk next to the coloring supplies. Can’t find it? Just ask a librarian!
Kits
Looking for something more educational? We have backpacks and totes that contain everything you’d need for a fun time learning through play and engaging in early literacy. Each bag has 1 to 3 books alongside manipulatives and toys. Best for babies all the way up to kindergarten age! These can be checked out and used at home.
School Age
Curiosity Cabinet
For our friends in grades 4 and up, check out the new crafts and gaming options in our new Curiosity Cabinet, which is open weekdays from 3-8:30 PM. It houses fun board games to play at the library, brain puzzles, DIY blackout poetry, zine making, and even some sensory support tools. Having trouble understanding the directions? Games include rules, but for kids who learn better with visuals each shelf features QR codes that link to how-to videos for game rules as well.
STEAM Kits
Bring home a STEAM Kit to play with! Check on the labels what age each kit is good for, but the collection has something for all ages. From the littlest of friends playing with magna-tiles, to school age kids learning the basics of coding.
Creativebug
This activity begins on a screen but quickly becomes a craft in your hands! Find something your child is curious about, watch the video, and then put it down to become immersed in creating.
Programming
Check out our Spark newsletter for opportunities to come to Library programs! All our programs are free.
Teen Game Shelf
In the Teen Scene, you can find a variety of games available for study breaks! This is also where we house some of our more complex games, great for learning on a day with time to spare.
Family
Library of Things
The Library of Things is full of interesting items to explore! Check out a metal detector and see what treasures you can find. There are lawn games and giant Jenga for outdoor play, and even a telescope to seek out the stars.
Book + Movie Combos
Read a book, then watch the movie! This might involve some screen time, but cross-reference analysis is great engagement for a brain of any age! Plus, when checking out a DVD, there is a clear intention of what you are watching and how long it will take. This reduces the decision fatigue brought on with endless options on streaming services and completely eliminates the temptation to “binge!”
