Many employers rely on Artificial Intelligence to automate recruitment of new employees, even if job seekers may not want to use AI themselves. AI Resume Screening puts the first look at your resume in the hands of artificial intelligence. But according to Forbes, “As AI recruiting tools become more sophisticated and widespread, the gap between employer enthusiasm and candidate skepticism may narrow, but only if companies prioritize transparency, fairness, and the human element. For job seekers, the key is to adapt without losing your authentic self.”
Here are some tips to help you meet rigid AI screening requirements while keeping yourself front and center.
- Make sure you use the important keywords from the description in your resume.
- Avoid typos and grammar mistakes.
- Use templates to make sure your formatting is easy for AI to understand.
- Keep the human element in your resume by making your examples personal and relevant.
There are plenty of platforms out there trying to sell subscriptions to AI services that claim they can automate your job search, or are specifically built for creating resumes. Some of the popular ones are Sonara and Teal. But you don’t need to spend money to write a better resume and cover letter.
If you want to use AI:
ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot are available to use for free. Here are steps to use a chatbot to create a resume. Be aware: The AI may store any information you put in, so what you are sharing could be accessed by someone else. Add contact information and specific dates of employment to the document you save your resume in, not the chatbot.
- Create a prompt. For example: You are a professional [your job here]. Write a resume in a standard format for [your industry here]. Include [as much detail as you want].
- Read what the AI generates to make sure it didn’t add anything extra you don’t want.
- Make any edits you want.
- Save it by copying and pasting it into a document.
If you want to avoid AI, the Library has a database called JobNow that can connect you with real volunteers to look over your resume. It also has resume and cover letter templates, and practice help for job interviews.
