Space Improvement Projects Questions

  • These projects are funded through a combination of sources:

    • Special reserves set aside for capital building repairs and improvement projects,
    • Fundraising from the Glenview Public Library Foundation’s capital campaign, and
    • Approximately $70,000 from the Illinois Public Library Construction Grant Program.
  • In 2023, we evaluated how our spaces are used to shape a long-term plan that reflects our community’s changing needs. Building on that work, the 2024 community survey gave us valuable feedback from you—our patrons. Together, these efforts highlighted three key priorities: updating the Youth Services area, enhancing the lobby with an improved vending café, and adding more study and workspaces.

  • Our 2024 community survey confirmed the need to focus on three key areas where improvements will make the greatest impact:

Improved Vending Café in the Lobby
Today, more patrons use the Library as a place to work, study, and connect. The lobby has become a true gathering space, and we want it to feel inviting and comfortable. That’s why we’re partnering with a local coffee shop to serve hot and cold drinks, while also upgrading vending machines to provide fresh food options.

    New Youth Services Play Space
The Library serves thousands of children every year—kids’ books make up 66% of all checkouts, and attendance at children’s programs outpaces every other audience. Since our children’s area was designed 15 years ago, new research has shown just how vital play is for a child’s cognitive growth. Our redesigned play space will combine the magic of books with the power of play, creating endless opportunities for learning, imagination, and discovery.

    More Study Rooms
With over 800 reservations each month, study rooms are among the Library’s most in-demand spaces. Quiet space for individuals is especially limited. To meet this need, we’re adding seven new study rooms for one to two people on the second floor, making it easier for everyone to find the right space—whether for focused work or group collaboration.

  • Yes, there will be some temporary impacts. We anticipate periodic closures of the east entrance, the east side of the lobby, the Multipurpose Room, and the Youth Services Department. As details are confirmed, we’ll share updates on this page. Improved Vending Cafe in the Lobby

The Library is a hub for reading, studying, and gathering. To make the lobby more inviting, we’re partnering with a local coffee shop to offer hot and cold coffee drinks and upgrading vending machines with fresh food options. The Multipurpose Room will be closed during renovations.

New Play Space for Kids

The Library serves thousands of children annually. Children’s books make up 66% of all checkouts, and kids' program attendance leads all audiences! In the 15 years since the design of our children’s area, new research has taught us more about the importance of play in nurturing a child's cognitive growth. Our redesigned play space will blend the magic of books with the power of play, offering endless opportunities for learning and discovery.

More Study Rooms for One to Two People

With over 700 study room reservations each month, finding quiet space for a meeting can be tough—especially during finals week! To meet demand, we’re adding seven small study rooms for one to two people on the second floor, freeing up existing rooms for larger groups.
