Volunteer Spotlight: Celebrating Hispanic Heritage

GPL offered a variety of programs during Hispanic Heritage Month. From lectures that focused on the powerful multicultural history of Chicago, to concerts that celebrated Latin music, GPL worked to pay tribute to Hispanic heritage and highlight the representation of Hispanic Americans in our community.

Throughout Hispanic Heritage Month, Glenbrook South senior Maria Lillig volunteered at programs at the Library. We talked to Maria about her time volunteering at GPL.

Tell us a little about yourself:

I enjoy being part of extracurricular activities such as Unidos, Chicano College Bowl, Latinx Reads Book Club, and TLC Tutoring. I am currently in the process of applying for college.

What programs have you volunteered for?

I started volunteering at the Library during the pandemic, so I picked up supplies from the Library to make blankets and toys to donate to animal shelters. I also volunteered at the Friends of the Glenview Public Library Used Book Sale by organizing donated books and helping at the sale. During Hispanic Heritage Month, I volunteered at the Mariachi Sirenas performance and the Artistas Pequeños event. I have enjoyed every service opportunity and am excited to continue helping at future events!

Why did you want to volunteer at GPL during Hispanic Heritage Month?

I thought it was a great opportunity to show my appreciation for my Latinx culture and to contribute to increasing Latinx representation in our community. These events were an opportunity to share with others the diverse aspects of Latinx culture, especially literature, music, and other forms of art. I want to thank the Library for all the opportunities it provides for our community, especially those for adolescents.

GPL wouldn't be as amazing as it is today without the help of our volunteers like Maria. As we continue to promote a culture of inclusion, kindness, and respect, we hope to reach Glenview residents of all ages and backgrounds.
