Starting the School Year with a Library Card

At GPL, we believe that every child in Glenview should start the school year with a library card. To achieve this goal, we worked with school districts 31, 34, and 39 to set up a system for parents to request a library card for their child while completing school registration.

With the click of a button, parents can request a library card for their child, which then gets mailed directly to the child's residence. "It eliminates a step for the parents that have a hard time getting to the Library, because of work or demanding schedules," says Patron Registration Specialist Tammy Tomasello.

"The idea itself is a beautiful one," adds Material Services Director Karen Kee. "All the children in Glenview have access to the Library and its materials."

Since the process began at the end of March, 1,323 new library cards have been requested, with more expected to be sent with the new school year starting in the fall. Students who receive their Library cards in the mail are invited to come explore the Library and see all GPL can offer them.
