There has been a lot of news lately about proposed cuts to the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the primary source of federal support for libraries and museums across
the country.
While the conversation around IMLS funding is important, I want to reassure you that the core services you rely on, like borrowing books, attending programs, using public computers, or simply having a welcoming place to relax, are not at risk. That's because over 95% of our funding comes from local support through property taxes. What sustains our Library isn't federal dollars; it's you and Glenview's ongoing commitment to maintaining an informed, connected community.
That said, IMLS funding remains vital to our Library and libraries nationwide. These federal dollars support programs that benefit all of us, including:
- Interlibrary loan systems
- Digital resources for students
- Professional development for library staff
- Free community programming
To help explain the broader impact of cuts at the federal level, we've created a news post on our website that we will continue to update as we learn more: Changes to Federal Funding and the Impact on Libraries.
Libraries thrive because of the people who believe in and support them. We're proud to be part of a strong network of libraries across the state and country, and even prouder to serve Glenview. Our community shows, every day, how much it values access to knowledge and information that keeps us engaged and connected.
Thank you for standing with us and supporting GPL's mission.
