Glenview Public Library is excited to welcome New York Times bestselling author Catherine Newman for an engaging discussion about her novel Sandwich, the featured selection for this year’s Glenview Reads Together, the Library’s annual community-wide reading program.
On Wednesday, April 9, at 7 PM in the Lakeview Room at Glenview Park Center, Newman will be in conversation with journalist Heidi Stevens, Director of External Affairs at the University of Chicago’s TMW Center for Early Learning + Public Health. Together, they will explore Sandwich’s themes of family dynamics, intergenerational trauma, and the realities of aging.
A witty and heartfelt novel, Sandwich follows Rocky, a woman in midlife grappling with the changes in her body while navigating unexpected challenges during her family’s annual Cape Cod vacation. As she revisits summers past—both joyful and painful—Rocky confronts the complexities of family, love, and the fleeting nature of youth.
"We selected Sandwich for Glenview Reads Together because it offers a deeply relatable and poignant look at the messiness of midlife and family relationships. Newman’s writing is sharp, funny, and full of heart, making it the perfect book to bring our community together for meaningful discussions," said Janet McIntyre, Outreach Manager at Glenview Public Library.
Catherine Newman is the New York Times bestselling author of fiction and nonfiction for both adults and children. She writes the Substack newsletter Crone Sandwich and has contributed to publications such as The New York Times, Real Simple, O, The Oprah Magazine, and Cup of Jo. Newman holds a PhD and serves as the Academic Department Coordinator of Creative Writing at Amherst College.
Glenview Reads Together encourages community members to read the same book, connect with neighbors, and engage in thought-provoking conversations about society, culture, and identity.
