Does your little one struggle with big feelings? Here are some tips for learning to manage big feelings from our Big Feelings Storytime!
- Name Your Feelings: Children need to be able to identify and name their feelings before they can work on managing them.
- Talk About Feelings & Listen Too: Model talking about feelings with your child. “I see that you are mad because it’s time to stop playing with your toys.” Make sure to take time to listen to your child talk about their feelings. Communication is key to healthy processing of feelings.
- Take a Break: Regulating emotions is a learned ability! Give your child adequate time to process their feelings. When children are upset, invite them to take a break: take deep breaths, do some yoga, count, or use a sensory bottle to calm down before talking.
- Practice Positive Thinking: Positive affirmations and self-talk help kids to feel loved, appreciated, and confident. This practice helps build self-esteem and empowers kids to build themselves up, which can benefit them later at school and extra-curriculars.
