The library – a place to read, work, study, find some peace and quiet. But have you ever thought of it as a place to meet friends? If you love reading, join a book club. If you love being creative, craft your holiday gifts in the Innovation Center. If you’re new to the neighborhood and looking for activities for your toddler, stop by Monday Movers. Genealogy Research Night, Knit & Purl, Board Game Nights – we have something for everyone.
This year, GPL has focused on the Library being a place where people can make social connections. We started a series of programs that we call Meet Up @ GPL, which encourages people to come together with neighbors, make new friends, and enjoy vibrant social connections to strengthen our community.
One of these programs was Learn to Play Mahjong, which was so popular, not only did we add another session, but those who came to the program started playing together outside of the Library. This led us to start a new Mahjong Club that meets monthly.
At our Speed Friending event, 18 pairs mutually expressed interest in sharing emails with each other to keep the conversations going. Another round of Speed Friending is scheduled in February.
At our Plant Swap, gardeners gathered to exchange their extra plant babies and share their tips and tricks. We’ve also held a Kitchenware Swap, Plant & Produce Swap, and Puzzle and
Board Game swaps. These programs give life to unwanted items and give people a chance to find neighbors with similar interests. This winter we’re hosting a Gift Wrap Swap to freshen
up your gifts. See all Meet Up @ GPL programs coming up this winter.
I love knitting and enjoy meeting other who share my passion. It was great connecting with new knitters at Knit & Purl and seeing the project everyone was working on. - Danae C.
The Library will always be a quiet place for you to work or relax, but it is so much more than that. We want to be a community hub for the people of Glenview, where you can find people who share your interests, and people who challenge you to think differently than you normally would. We want the Library to belong to everyone.
