You’ve signed up for storytime and you’re excited to attend! And if you want to get the most out of your storytime, here are four tried and true tips to make your storytime the best it can be:
Arrive early. This allows your child a moment to settle in the room and for you both to say hello to other attendees. Take the time to make connections with other caregivers and their children. Some of the best friendships were formed at storytime!
Participate. This one might seem obvious, but we want our caregivers to be brave and play along at storytime! Sing the songs and do the motions. Show your child how to find their body parts for “Head, Shoulders, Knees, & Toes”. Model how to listen to a story. Be enthusiastic and remember: what happens in storytime stays in storytime.
Check out books. After storytime is over, visit our picture book and board book collections. Select some books to take home with you. Once your child is old enough, let them pick out their favorites too. By making reading an important part of your lives outside of the library, you reinforce everything that storytime is all about!
Talk about storytime. Don’t forget about us during the rest of the week! Make sure to talk to your child about storytime. Ask them what their favorite part of storytime was on the way home. Sing songs that you learned together. Talk about visiting the library and seeing their storytime friends in the days before storytime.
Put all these together and you’ll be a storytime pro!
