Vacations, local trips, and the beach and the pool: when you’re getting ready for a summer adventure, make sure you pack the Library too! Besides physical books and media, the Library has a lot of different formats to make your excursions the best they’ve ever been.
Road Trips
When you’re in the car and everyone wants to listen to their own books, look no further than our Wonderbooks and Vox Books! These books come with audio imbedded into the book and a headphone jack—no need to make the whole family listen to a book they aren’t interested in. Wonderbooks and Vox Books are available for multiple age ranges, too. Picture books, beginning readers, and easy nonfiction books are shelved in J Read-Alongs while chapter books, graphic novels, and longer nonfiction are shelved in J Audio Read.
And, we also circulate Launchpads, which are curated tablets filled with educational games and activities. These tablets work without wi-fi and are available for a wide variety of ages including preschoolers!
Bike Rides
Bike safety first, so no headphones or listening while you’re biking! That being said, help prepare your preschoolers for going on a bike ride with Pedal Around Glenview: a booklist all about two-wheelers and more.
Beach & Pool Days
For little ones, it’s best to leave the picture books home on water play days—but bring the library in digital forms! If you have a waterproof case for your tablet or smartphone, let your child watch Tumble Book Library videos where books will be read to them—a great option for lifeguard breaks or applying sunscreen before jumping back in.
Or make it a family affair and download an audiobook to listen to. Hoopla has a lot of choices that are *always* available. Some of our favorite family listens include: Winnie-the-Pooh, Frog and Toad, the Ramona books, and Lewis Carroll.
And we hope you stop in often to participate in our Summer Reading Challenge, opens a new window and to get lots of reading recommendations from our librarians! Happy summer!
