Morningstar

Morningstar Investment Center is a fan favorite for stock information. This financial information resource has something for everyone.

Are you a pro? Financial news and commentary from Morningstar will keep you up to date with financial happenings and insights. If you are new to investing, use the Investing Classroom to get up and running on everything you need to know about investing methods and terminology.

On the dashboard, you will find a market and international barometer to easily judge how good of a day the market is having. Browse sectors, IPOs, commodity prices, current and past fair market value, and the US market indexes. The 529 planner will give you insights on Illinois' top two 529 plans, including their rating, financial information, and max deductions.

In the video below, learn to use the Morningstar Screener to find and learn about stocks, bonds, and ETFs.

Value Line

Did you know that the time-tested favorite, the Value Line Investment Survey, no longer requires a visit to the physical library building? The Library’s online subscription to Value Line includes investment surveys that are updated more frequently than the print ever could be.

In addition to the original Value Line summary and index, its expanded to include other newsletters such as the stock market today, selection and opinion, small and midcap (smc) investment survey, options survey, fund advisor plus, the new ETF survey, and additional short supplementary reports covering top companies like NVIDIA and Netflix.

Nexus Uni

Nexus Uni by LexisNexis is a massive resource that includes news and magazine publications, court cases, laws, business directories, supreme court decisions, company executive contacts, and company financial information.

For industry reports, choose “market insights” then “selected industry reports”. Find a report with a paper icon next to it and click on that icon to search Nexus Uni. Filter for location or date.

Say you want to find out who oversees marketing at the American Planning Association. You can use the Nexus Dossier to look up a list of executives and connect with them on LinkedIn. See a demo of this in the following video.

Reference Solutions

Reference Solutions is truly a phone book for the 21st century. It includes several “sub databases” that can be considered more targeted phone books. For example, job seekers can search for companies in a region with certain keywords in “U.S. Jobs/Internships”.

US Historical Businesses can tell you what business was at a specific address. For example, we can search for the quaker oats factory in Danville, IL to learn when it opened (1997).

Businesses or nonprofits looking for customers or donors can create a list of residents (up to 300 households or businesses at a time) in either “US Consumers / Lifestyles” (which includes hobby and home value credentials) or “U.S. Businesses”. “New Movers” and “New Businesses” can be used to discover who’s new in town.

Keep in mind that some information in Reference Solutions is dependent on land line records and therefore requires fact-checking.

See the video below to see an example of how to make a list in Reference Solutions.

Keys to Starting a Business

Keys to Starting a Business is a one stop shop for prospective entrepreneurs that are interested in starting a business.

Many entrepreneurs begin only with an idea or by going out and landing gigs. Those with an idea can get lost in the patent and trademark phases and then have trouble bringing their product or idea to the market.

Sections include:

  • Drafting a business model
  • Business planning
  • Creating a marketing plan
  • Intellectual property
  • Legally forming a business
  • Funding options and sources
  • A high-level overview of managing business finances
  • Hiring and retaining employees
  • Payroll

Each section offers expert business information followed by definitions, web resources, and Glenview Public Library adult learning resources. In the back, learn about library resources and discover the local business / entrepreneur support network organizations. These include the city, the chamber, SBA-supported organizations like SCORE and the SBDC, and nearby incubators.

All the online resources and databases described above are not an exhaustive list of all the business, investing, and career resources available through the Glenview Public Library.
